Did You Know?

  • Lyme Disease is the most reported vector-borne illness in the United States

  • Transmitted by bites from the deer tick

  • It can infect dogs and horses

  • Signs in pets include:

    • Fever

    • Loss of appetite

    • Lameness

    • Joint swelling

    • Decreased activity

Watch Out for the Pesky Newcomer, the Asian Long-Horned Tick

  • Reported for the first time in the United States in 2017

  • Found on pets, livestock, wildlife, and people in eastern and southeastern US states

  • Females reproduce asexually

  • Thousands of ticks can be found on a single animal

  • The most common diseases carried by Asian long-horned ticks are bovine theileriosis and babesiosis

 

Dangers of Fleas:

 

  • Most common external feline parasite

  • Frequently causes anemia in kittens

  • Fleas can’t fly, but can jump as far as 7 feet
